Sebastian Dows-Miller is a Stipendiary Lecturer in French at Merton and St Peter's Colleges, University of Oxford, and a doctoral researcher in Medieval and Modern Languages at St Hilda's College. His research focuses on manuscript transmission of Old French short texts, employing mixed-method approaches combining data-driven analysis with traditional philology. Key areas include scribal abbreviation, codicology, and palaeography. He has contributed to peer-reviewed journals like Reinardus and Notes & Queries, and actively participates in workshops on digital humanities and medieval studies, including events organized by the CROSSREADS project and the University of Copenhagen.
His doctoral thesis examines a 14th-century manuscript collection (Paris, BnF français 24432), exploring transmission, authorship, and textual context through interdisciplinary methods. Recent conference presentations address topics such as quantitative approaches to scribal hands, urban climates in medieval codices, and the intersection of bestiaries and AI. He has also authored book reviews for The Times Literary Supplement and Zeitschrift für Romanische Philologie.
Professional engagements include co-organizing the Teaching the Codex workshop at Merton College and contributing to an upcoming Open Access volume on abbreviation studies.
