Professor Daniel Wakelin is the Jeremy Griffiths Professor of Medieval English Palaeography at the University of Oxford's Faculty of English Language & Literature and a Fellow of St Hilda's College. His research focuses on manuscripts and early printed books of English literature (1100s–1500s), emphasizing humanist literature, everyday literacy, and Chaucerian traditions. He combines palaeography with literary criticism to explore authorial and scribal creativity. Key projects include the Designing English: Graphics on the Medieval Page exhibition and co-editing works like William Worcester's The Boke of Noblesse. He also serves as executive secretary of the Early English Text Society and co-edits The Review of English Studies and Studies in Medieval Literature.
Research Interests: Medieval manuscripts and printed texts, scribal creativity, Chaucerian traditions, medieval carols, pragmatic literacy, and interdisciplinary approaches to textual analysis. Awards include the 2015 DeLong Prize for Scribal Correction and Literary Craft.
Teaching: Supervises MSt and DPhil students in medieval English studies, contributing to courses on medieval literature and manuscript culture. Collaborates on Leverhulme Trust-funded projects like Unprinted: Publication beyond the Press.
