Dr. Emilio Bonfiglio is a Researcher at the University of Hamburg, affiliated with the ERC-funded project 'DeLiCaTe' (Development of Literacy in the Caucasian Territories). He is part of the Department of History and Culture of the Middle East. His research focuses on Late Antique and Medieval textual cultures, particularly Armenian and Byzantine studies, manuscript analysis, and the interplay between literacy, religion, and cultural identity. He has contributed to projects such as the preservation of Timbuktu manuscripts and the study of Armenian textual traditions.
Education: Holds a PhD (title unspecified) as indicated by his 'Dr.' title. His academic work bridges philology, codicology, and cultural history, with a strong emphasis on understudied manuscripts and their sociohistorical contexts.
Research interests include Armenian-Byzantine interactions, the reception of patristic writings (e.g., John Chrysostom), palimpsest analysis, and the role of literacy in cross-cultural exchanges. His publications explore textual transmission, religious polemics, and the methodology of studying marginalized literary traditions.
Recent activities include guest lectures on multispectral imaging of manuscripts, workshops on early Christian literacy, and collaborative projects like the Vienna Agathangelos codex analysis. He has co-edited volumes on Armenia-Byzantium relations and Armenian texts' cultural significance.
