Christian Brockmann is a Professor of Classical Philology (Greek) and Head of the Institute of Greek and Latin Philology at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Humanities. He leads major research initiatives including the Cluster of Excellence 'Understanding Written Artefacts' (UWA) and the 'Etymologika' project, focusing on manuscript cultures and textual transmission. His work bridges codicology, paleography, and philosophical history, with specializations in Aristotle's Organon transmission, Byzantine manuscripts, and ancient medical texts.
Research interests encompass Greek drama (Aristophanes), Plato's dialogues, and the reception of classical knowledge in medieval manuscripts. He directs the Graduate School and has coordinated projects like SFB 950 'Manuscript Cultures'. Awards include membership in the Hamburg Academy of Sciences (2021).
Publications (55+) span interdisciplinary manuscript analysis, ancient medical commentary, and critical editions. Recent work highlights include studies on layered manuscripts (Codex Vat. gr. 244) and Byzantine ink analysis. He organizes international conferences on textual transmission and lexicographical traditions.
