Professor Dr. Jost Gippert is a Senior Professor at the University of Hamburg's Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC) and Principal Investigator of the ERC-funded project 'DeLiCaTe' (Development of Literacy in the Caucasian Territories). He holds a PhD from the Free University of Berlin (1977) and a Habilitation from the University of Bamberg (1991). His career includes roles as Full Professor at Goethe University Frankfurt and researcher at institutions across Europe.
His research focuses on Caucasian Studies, literacy development, manuscript analysis, and cultural heritage preservation. Notable projects include the study of palimpsests, medieval Armenian sources, and the linguistic legacy of Caucasian Albania. He has received prestigious awards, including Honorary Doctorates from Georgian universities and membership in the National Academy of Sciences of Tbilisi.
Gippert has supervised 22 PhD students, 5 post-docs, and 18 Master's students. His work spans interdisciplinary collaborations, organizing workshops on palimpsests, literacy, and manuscript cultures. He actively contributes to editorial boards of journals like Old World and Medieval and Early Modern Armenian Studies.
Key interests include the materiality of texts, cross-cultural phenomena in manuscripts, and the application of AI to historical document analysis. His research bridges linguistics, archaeology, and digital humanities.
