Professor Joy V. Goldsmith holds a faculty position in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Memphis and is an Affiliate Faculty member in the School of Public Health. She specializes in health communication science, particularly in healthcare provider training, palliative care, and chronic illness contexts. Her work integrates media, theatre, and film into applied research, emphasizing caregiver communication, simulation training, and mHealth/e-learning tools. She co-authored eight books and over 70 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on health literacy, oncology nursing communication, and interprofessional collaboration.
Education: PhD from the University of Oklahoma, MS from Southern Illinois University, and BA from Bethel College.
Her research interests include developing interventions to support family caregivers and healthcare providers, such as the COMFORT Model—a communication framework for palliative care and provider training. The CommunicateComfort.com initiative disseminates her curricula and resources globally. Recent grants involve collaborations with institutions like MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Veterans Administration, though many remain unfunded. Notably, she secured $29,989 for a 2024–2025 Australian project on caregiver training.
Professor Goldsmith has pioneered the COMFORT Communication App and contributed to palliative care training courses across the U.S., Australia, and Kenya. Her applied work bridges theoretical communication models with practical tools like plain language planners and digital resources to improve provider-patient interactions.
