Amanda J. Young is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Memphis, where she has taught since 2004. Her research focuses on health communication, particularly in patient-provider interactions, health literacy, and end-of-life care. She holds a PhD in Rhetoric from Carnegie Mellon University, an MA in Technical and Professional Writing from Eastern Washington University, and a BS in English Composition from Davis and Elkins College.
Her work spans qualitative studies in cystic fibrosis care, contraceptive counseling, ICU communication, and grief dynamics. Notable projects include developing mHealth resources for oncology caregivers and studying communication barriers in pediatric cancer trials. She has secured multiple grants as PI/co-PI, including NIH-funded projects on contraceptive uptake and palliative care communication.
Dr. Young’s publications address themes like family caregiver communication in intensive care units, spiritual grief, and narratives in end-of-life care. She has advised over a decade of grant-funded research and contributed to curriculum development in public health programs. Her service roles include coordinating graduate studies and leading search committees within the university.
