Professor Joy Notter is a Professor of Community Healthcare at Birmingham City University, based in the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences. Her research focuses on participatory, multi-method approaches addressing healthcare workforce diversity, palliative care, chronic illness impact, and global health initiatives in regions like Kenya, Vietnam, and Zambia. She has extensive international experience in nursing capacity building across Vietnam, Ukraine, Romania, and Moldova. Notter holds a Master’s from the University of Surrey and a PhD from the University of Wales, College of Medicine, Cardiff.
Her professional roles include founding editorships of the British Journal of Nursing, British Journal of Community Nursing, and British Journal of Midwifery. Awards include a Vietnamese Government medal and honorary professorship at Hanoi Medical University. She has supervised over 12 PhD students and contributed to policy through roles like Council Member of the Palliative Care Forum.
Research interests span BAME staff retention in the NHS, loss/grief training evaluation, and advancing wound care expertise in Vietnam. Current projects include enhancing critical care nursing in Zambia.
