Dr. Joshua Kurek is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environment at Mount Allison University. His research focuses on paleolimnology, environmental change, and the impacts of human activities on freshwater ecosystems. He employs sediment core analysis, diatom and chironomid studies, and modern environmental monitoring to explore historical and contemporary ecological shifts.
Key research interests include pollution legacies from mining, agriculture (e.g., mink farming), and oil sands development; climate change effects on aquatic communities; and the role of microplastics in freshwater systems. Dr. Kurek’s work integrates field studies, laboratory analyses, and innovative data visualization tools like tidypaleo.
His studies often reveal long-term environmental trends, such as the persistent impacts of DDT, heavy metals, and nutrient runoff on lake ecosystems. He collaborates with Indigenous communities to explore culturally relevant environmental engagement strategies, as seen in his work on Indigenous-language communication in aquatic sciences.
Dr. Kurek maintains an active research lab, eCAB Lab, which focuses on applied and fundamental questions in environmental science. His publications span journals in limnology, ecology, and environmental toxicology, with a focus on bridging historical and contemporary environmental challenges.
