Josh Bilson is a Research Fellow in Nutrition Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Southampton. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Biology, an MRes in Toxicology, and a PhD from the University of Southampton, supervised by Professors Jaswinder K. Sethi, Chris D. Byrne, and Philip C. Calder. His research focuses on novel factors associated with liver fibrosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and their comorbidities such as cardiovascular and kidney diseases. His work integrates clinical studies, biomarker discovery, and translational research.
Key research interests include bile acid metabolism, adipose tissue biology, and the interplay between metabolic disorders and organ dysfunction. Recent studies explore the impact of metabolic syndrome traits on kidney disease risk, thyroid dysfunction links to MASLD, and the role of synbiotic treatments in NAFLD progression.
Publications highlight his contributions to liver disease epidemiology, clinical trial designs for early cancer detection in diabetes patients, and meta-analyses of endocrine-metabolic relationships. He actively collaborates with international teams and has presented at conferences, including a 2020 talk on Growth Differentiation Factor-15’s role in NAFLD.
