Chris Byrne

Professor Chris Byrne is a Professor of Endocrinology & Metabolism at the University of Southampton. He is affiliated with the Institute of Developmental Sciences and the Nutrition, Endocrinology and Metabolism department. His research focuses on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and their intersections with diabetes, cardiovascular health, and metabolic disorders. He has been recognized as a world-leading expert in NAFLD research, ranked 5th globally by Expertscape.

Professor Byrne has led numerous research projects funded by organizations like the Medical Research Council (MRC), Diabetes UK, and the British Heart Foundation. His work includes developing diagnostic tools (e.g., acFibroMASH index), exploring treatment efficacy (e.g., SGLT2 inhibitors), and investigating MASLD’s link to extra-hepatic complications such as chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular risk. He has supervised at least one PhD student, Declan McDonnell.

He holds significant awards including the Dorothy Hodgkin Lecture Award (2012), Banting Memorial Lecture Award (2021), and ACCEA Silver Award (2016). He actively contributes to external organizations like the EASD NAFLD Study Group and frequently lectures on NAFLD diagnosis, management, and comorbidities. His research emphasizes holistic approaches to MASLD treatment and improving global healthcare strategies for metabolic liver diseases.
