Dr Joseph Mintz is an Associate Professor in Education and Programme Leader of the Early Years Education (Online) MA at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE). His research focuses on inclusion, special educational needs, teacher education for inclusion, and educational technology, with a particular emphasis on early years education. He has led projects in London and internationally, including collaborations in Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia. Notably, he initiated the SEND pathway in the Primary PGCE in 2015, which continues to support trainee teachers in inclusive practices.
Dr Mintz has held leadership roles at IOE, including Academic Head of Learning and Teaching (2015–2018), Lead for Innovation and Enterprise (2018–2021), and Programme Leader for the Post Graduate Diploma in Social Science Research Methods (2019–2022). He also served at Ofsted as Head of the Research Response Unit (2022–2023), contributing to reviews of careers guidance in special schools and other institutions.
His work integrates international perspectives, reflecting UCL’s global focus. Current projects include evaluating leadership development in Saudi Arabia and examining transitions for children with SEND from early years to primary schools. Dr Mintz emphasizes applying research to real-world educational practices and values collaborative learning with students from diverse backgrounds.
