Verna Brandford is a Lecturer at University College London's IOE - Faculty of Education and Society, specializing in Culture, Communication & Media. She currently serves as Subject Lead for the Secondary PGCE Languages course and London Teach First Secondary Modern Languages programme. Her career spans over two decades, beginning as a part-time PGCE tutor in 1994 before transitioning to full-time academia.
Her research focuses on the Storyline approach in Modern Foreign Languages classrooms, exploring how narrative structures enhance student creativity and confidence in language use. She has established international partnerships with institutions in France, Germany, Spain, and Italy, notably fostering collaboration between the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle and UCL's teacher training programs.
Brandford's contributions were recognized with the Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques (2007) from the French government for her work bridging educational systems. She also serves as Departmental Equal Opportunity Liaison Officer (DEOLO), advocating for social justice and inclusive environments within the IOE.
Her professional experience includes roles as a school Head of Department, Ofsted inspector, and consultant advisor, reflecting her deep engagement with both classroom practice and educational policy.
