Will Bailey-Watson is an Associate Professor at the University of Reading’s Institute of Education (IoE). He serves as Programme Director of the Secondary PGCE and Subject Leader for the History PGCE. His roles include Director of Recruitment and Admissions, Chair of the University Teaching Fellows Community of Practice, and member of the University Senate. Before joining academia, he taught History in schools and served as a Head of History, redesigning curricula to emphasize diversity and inclusion.
He holds a BA in History from the University of Birmingham and an MSc in Learning and Teaching from the University of Oxford. His career spans teaching, teacher training, and curriculum development. He has supported over 150 History PGCE trainees, many of whom now hold leadership roles in schools. His research focuses on history curriculum design, teacher development, and educational collaboration, with contributions to national policy consultations and influential publications like Teaching History.
His articles emphasize practical pedagogy, such as oral history methodologies and global curriculum frameworks. His work has been cited by the DfE and Ofsted as best practice. Awards include the Royal Historical Society’s Innovative Teaching Award (2021) and the Institute of Education’s Teaching and Learning Award (2017–2018). He co-founded the ‘meanwhile, elsewhere…’ initiative to diversify history curricula and co-curated the ‘Curricularium’ talks series.
He actively contributes to professional bodies like the Historical Association and has presented at conferences including the Historical Association Conference and ResearchEd. His leadership in teacher education was recognized by the 2024 Ofsted rating for the Secondary PGCE programme.
