Professor Joseph Maiolo is a faculty member at King’s College London, affiliated with the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy and the Department of War Studies. He holds a PhD in International History from the London School of Economics and has held teaching and research positions at institutions including the University of Leicester, University of Leeds, and Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies.

His research focuses on the origins of major wars, particularly the Second World War, with emphasis on arms races, intelligence history, resource security, and military futurology. He has authored books on the 1930s arms race and co-edited volumes on 20th-century international history, while his current work explores raw materials in international politics in partnership with NTNU Trondheim.
He serves as editor of The Journal of Strategic Studies and member of the editorial board for Intelligence & National Security, with notable awards including Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (2002) and Senior Visiting Research Fellowship (2005). Maiolo supervises graduate students in international relations, arms race dynamics, and intelligence history, and leads the MA in Intelligence and International Security program.
