Joseph L. Angel is a Professor of Bible and Jewish History at Yeshiva University, where he has taught courses on ancient Judaism and biblical studies since 2008. His research centers on Jewish literature and history in the Greco-Roman world, with a focus on the Dead Sea Scrolls, prayer traditions, messianism, demonology, and the Jewish context of early Christianity.

Angel’s scholarly work includes a critical edition and commentary on the Dead Sea Scrolls, notably his 2022 book The Songs of the Sage (4Q510-511), which analyzes ancient Hebrew prayer manuscripts. He has held prestigious research fellowships at the University of Göttingen, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the University of Michigan.
His recent courses include Classical Jewish History (JHI 1200), The Book of Daniel (BIB 2800), Rabbinic Aramaic (TAS 6353), and Second Temple Jewish Literature (JHI 5213). Angel’s contributions bridge academic rigor with historical depth, emphasizing the intersection of Jewish religious thought and broader ancient cultural contexts.
