Joseph C. Berendzen

Joseph C. Berendzen serves as Chair of the Department of Philosophy and holds the William and Audrey Hutchinson Distinguished Professorship at Loyola University New Orleans. He earned his Ph.D. from Villanova University and specializes in 19th and 20th Century European philosophy.

His research bridges Continental philosophy (German Idealism, Frankfurt School critical theory, French existential phenomenology) with contemporary Anglo-American philosophy. He teaches courses on German Romanticism, Naturalism, Social and Political Philosophy, and European World Views.

Recent publications focus on perceptual normativity, recognition theory, and skilled action in the works of Merleau-Ponty and McDowell. Articles include analyses of Hegelian recognition dynamics and phenomenological contributions to cognitive science.
