Jose Garcia-Bustos is an Adjunct Associate Professor in Microbiology at Monash University. His research focuses on identifying drugable pathways in microbial pathogens using small-molecule inhibitors. Previously, he held leadership roles in GlaxoSmithKline's drug discovery programs targeting malaria and neglected tropical diseases.
Educational Background: Honors degree in Fundamental Biology from Universidad Complutense Madrid (thesis on phospholipid biosynthesis). Ph.D. in bacteriocins at Universidad Autonoma Madrid. Postdoctoral work at The Rockefeller University (bacterial cell wall structure) and Basel University (yeast nuclear transport).
Research Highlights: Leads projects on malaria drug targets and cell division mechanisms. Recipient of Fulbright and EMBO fellowships. Current work explores repurposing anti-malarial compounds to identify essential parasite targets.
Grants & Projects: Principal Investigator for Class II/A Biosafety Cabinet project (2014-2015) funded by Equity Trustees. Collaborates internationally on neglected infectious diseases.
Publications: Over 50 peer-reviewed articles including recent works on antimalarial toxicity profiles, kinase interactions in Plasmodium, and anthelmintic drug development. Active contributor to sustainable development goals related to health and disease eradication.
