Christian Doerig is an Adjunct Professor and former Head of the Department of Microbiology at Monash University. He holds dual positions as Directeur de Recherches at INSERM (France) and Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow. His research focuses on protein phosphorylation in Plasmodium falciparum, aiming to elucidate signaling pathways and identify antimalarial drug targets. He pioneered studies on kinase functions in malaria parasites and collaborates globally to advance drug discovery.
Education: PhD in molecular virology from the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC), followed by postdoctoral training in herpesvirus research in the USA. Established Inserm units at the University of Glasgow and EPFL, Switzerland, before joining Monash in 2011.
Research Interests: Signal transduction, kinomics, cell cycle control, and host-parasite interactions. Recent work identifies essential kinases in Plasmodium and host erythrocytes, with focus on their cellular roles and pharmacological inhibition. Active in structural biology and pharmacology collaborations for drug development.
Grants & Projects: Led major initiatives including 'Host cells versus malaria parasites' (NHMRC), 'Redox regulation of kinases' (Group of Eight), and a sequencing facility (ARC). Editor-in-Chief of Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology.
Labs/Teams: Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute. Research emphasizes drugable kinase targets and host-directed therapies for malaria.
