Jorja Collins is a Lecturer in the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food at Monash University, specializing in environmental sustainability within hospital foodservices. She holds roles as an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian and Early Career Researcher, with a focus on reducing food waste, promoting plant-based diets, and sustainable procurement practices. She coordinates units in food science, research, and food systems, and actively supervises PhD students in related areas.
Her research explores four key areas: measuring food waste via audits, repurposing unopened hospital food, local food procurement, and shifting to plant-based proteins. She has influenced policy changes like the Victorian Nutrition and Quality Food Standards. Jorja received a Churchill Fellowship (2020) to study U.S. hospital sustainability strategies.
Collaborations include projects on climate education in healthcare and sustainable food systems. She has been awarded the Dean's Excellence in Education and Vice-Chancellor's Award for Enhancing Learning (2021). Her work addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals related to zero hunger, climate action, and responsible consumption.
Notable outputs include studies on landfill diversion strategies, food safety repurposing, and systematic reviews on waste management. She contributes to over 40 publications and actively engages in media discussions on sustainability in healthcare.
