Liza Barbour is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food at Monash University, specializing in public health nutrition and food sustainability systems. She co-designed Australia's first undergraduate unit on food sustainability systems for nutrition and dietetics students, now part of the core curriculum. Her research focuses on planetary health, sustainable food systems, and education reform to address climate and health challenges. Liza is an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian with field experience in remote Australia, the Kingdom of Tonga, and urban Melbourne.
Education: PhD in Public Health Nutrition (Monash University, 2023), exploring local government policy responses to healthy and sustainable diets. She also holds a Faculty Education Fellowship (2022–2024) to co-design planetary health curricula with health professions educators and students.
Research Interests: Liza’s work bridges education and policy, emphasizing sustainable food systems, climate change adaptation, and social justice. She leads projects on curriculum development for planetary health, collaborates internationally on ICDA’s sustainable food systems toolkit, and chairs Dietitians Australia’s Food and Environment committee. Her research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals 2 (Zero Hunger), 3 (Good Health), and 13 (Climate Action).
Awards: Recipient of the SCS Teaching Excellence Award (2023) and NHMRC Post-Graduate Scholarship (2019), among others. She co-led teams honored with Monash’s Dean’s and Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for curriculum innovation.
Grants & Projects: Principal Investigator on projects including ‘Co-designing planetary health curriculum for health professions education’ (2023–2024) and ‘Building capacity to teach climate change in health education’ (2019–2020). She collaborates across disciplines and countries to advance sustainable healthcare practices.
Labs/Teams: Active in Monash’s health professions education networks and global initiatives like the ICDA’s sustainable food systems advisory group. She mentors educators and students in curriculum co-design and policy advocacy.
