Jorge Tamayo is an Assistant Professor of Business Administration in the Strategy Unit at Harvard Business School. He teaches the Strategy course in the MBA curriculum and focuses on applied microeconomics, particularly industrial organization and development economics. His research examines firm decision-making, productivity, and market responses to pricing strategies such as subscriptions and memberships. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Southern California, and prior to academia, worked at the Central Bank of Colombia and as an adjunct professor at Eafit University.
His research interests include managerial quality’s impact on productivity, competitive pricing dynamics, and the effects of economic policies on crime and labor markets. Notable contributions include studies on labor productivity in garment factories, the relationship between formal employment and organized crime, and the design of reskilling programs in the age of AI. He has co-authored multiple award-winning articles, including the 2023 HBR Prize-winning piece on reskilling. Tamayo has also developed teaching materials on strategic interactions, labor unrest, and corporate digital transformation.
His work spans case studies on firms like Davivienda Bank’s digital transformation, Arcos Dorados’ logistics challenges, and Toyota’s labor union dynamics in Argentina. Key themes include organizational responses to technological change, workforce training strategies, and the interplay between economic structures and societal outcomes.
