Jonathan King is a Lecturer in Veterinary Science at the Aberystwyth School of Veterinary Science, Aberystwyth University, a position he commenced in October 2023 after 24 years of diverse veterinary practice across Wales. His career spans rural mixed practice, government veterinary services with APHA, Centre Management at the Wales Veterinary Science Centre, and foundational contributions to establishing the Aberystwyth School of Veterinary Science.
His educational credentials include a BVetMed from the Royal Veterinary College, London (1999) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (PGCTHE) from Aberystwyth University (2018), for which he earned Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
King's research centers on veterinary microbiology and wildlife disease ecology, with emphasis on microbiome and metabolome analysis of livestock and wildlife species. His work integrates diagnostic pathology with molecular techniques including next-generation sequencing to investigate bovine tuberculosis, farm animal welfare, and disease ecology in free-ranging populations like European badgers.
Recent publications (2022) demonstrate a clear trend toward applying 'omics' technologies to Welsh wildlife populations, particularly examining badger metabolomes and microbiomes.
