Professor Glyn Hewinson is a Sêr Cymru research chair and Professor at Aberystwyth University, leading the Centre of Excellence for Bovine Tuberculosis for Wales. He has over 250 peer-reviewed publications and an h-index of 74, with extensive experience in bovine TB research, including genotyping, vaccine development, and diagnostics. He previously served as Lead Scientist for bovine TB at the Animal and Plant Health Agency and Chief Scientist at the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (2010–2014). He is an OIE expert on bovine TB and co-authored the Bovine TB Strategy Review (Godfray Review).
His research interests focus on bovine tuberculosis, Mycobacterium bovis, veterinary diagnostics, vaccine development, genotyping, and One Health. He has led multidisciplinary teams to develop diagnostic tests and vaccines for cattle and badgers. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and animal welfare.
His recent publications reveal a strong trend in genomic epidemiology of Mycobacterium bovis, metabolomic profiling of infected cattle and badgers, and development of novel diagnostic tools. These works span veterinary science, microbiology, immunology, and public health, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration and real-world application.

Professor Hewinson leads multiple externally funded research projects, including the Centre of Excellence for Bovine TB for Wales, a real-time TB detector project, and government-funded initiatives on bovine TB control in Pembrokeshire. He chairs the Bovine TB Programme Board (2024–2041) and advises on national and international policy. He has supervised research teams and collaborated widely across the UK and internationally.
He leads the Centre of Excellence for Bovine Tuberculosis for Wales and collaborates closely with the Welsh Government, UK Research and Innovation, and international partners. His team integrates genomics, metabolomics, and immunology to advance TB control strategies in both animals and humans.
