Dr. Jonathan Ervine is a Senior Lecturer in French and Francophone Studies at Bangor University's School of Modern Languages. He specializes in French popular culture, identity politics, and representations of marginality through cinema, sports, and humor. His research explores intersections of media, race, and national belonging.
- Education: PhD in Cinematic Representations of Social and Racial Exclusion (Leeds, 2009), MA on French War Cinema (Leeds, 2004), BA in French and Philosophy (Leeds, 2002)
- Leadership: Head of Department of Modern Languages and Cultures (2022-present)
Research Themes span French cinema's portrayal of social exclusion, the role of stand-up comedy in identity debates, and sports culture as a lens for understanding French republicanism. He examines humor's dual role in reinforcing or challenging stereotypes, and analyzes video games as emerging cultural artifacts.
Media Engagement includes frequent commentary on French politics and culture for BBC, TRT World, and The Conversation, covering topics from Macron's reforms to antisemitism in football. His blog discusses modern languages and cultural studies.
