Caroline Fache is an Associate Professor at Rice University's Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures. She specializes in French and Francophone Studies, focusing on immigrant representation in film, TV, and literature. Her research explores immigration comedy as a subgenre in French cinema and identity formation processes. Previously, she chaired Africana Studies and French & Francophone Studies at Davidson College and served as Assistant Dean for Curricular Innovation. She currently leads the Conseil International d’Études Francophone (CIEF) and will host its 2025 Cape Town conference.
Education: PhD (French Literature, Indiana University), two MAs (French Literature from Indiana University and Université de Lille), and a BA from Université de Lille. Her teaching spans Black Paris studies, West African cinema, and translation courses. She organizes study abroad programs in France, Morocco, and Reunion Island.
Key research interests include Black French Studies, diaspora narratives, and postcolonial cultural analysis. Her recent work analyzes comedic portrayals of immigration and identity disintegration in contemporary French media. Awards include the 2023 ACS/Mellon Leadership Fellowship.
Major publications include Immigration Comedy In France: Race Relations on Screen (book project), translations of Boubacar Boris Diop's works, and edited volumes on memory studies. She collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to bridge Francophone cultural studies and global contexts.
