Jonas A. Cox is an Associate Professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Gonzaga University's School of Education. He teaches courses including Learning Theories (EDTE 201), Instructional Foundations (EDTE 101/511), and Elementary Math and Science methods. With diverse professional experience including banking, construction, and farm management prior to entering education, Dr. Cox brings practical life experience to his academic work.
Dr. Cox earned his Ph.D. in Elementary Education from the University of Iowa (1997), following an M.A. in Teaching from Lewis and Clark College (1989) and a B.S. in Business Administration from Oregon State University (1983). Before his academic career, he taught elementary and middle school for six years in Oregon.
His research focuses on three primary areas: environmental education and its effectiveness as an educational approach; the impact of teacher perceptions of knowledge on educational reform adoption; and alternative educational models, particularly studying the success of Sunnyside High School's alternative education model. His work with the Pacific Education Institute has resulted in publications, a white paper adopted by the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, and a pending book on implementing environmental education.
Dr. Cox's publications reveal a strong emphasis on environmental education, alternative schooling models, and cognitive development in children. His work consistently addresses equity issues and the needs of at-risk students, demonstrating a commitment to educational justice and innovative teaching approaches across multiple educational settings.

Dr. Cox has secured significant research funding, including a $237,457 award from the Washington State Higher Education Board for regional professional development centers and a $135,000 grant from the National Park Foundation for the Lake Roosevelt Recreation Area River Mile Project. His funded work often creates research assistant positions for graduate students and involves partnerships between Gonzaga University and local school districts.
He is actively involved in professional organizations including the Environmental Education Association of Washington, Pacific Education Institute, and the Society for the Advancement of Genetic Epistemology.
