Jon P. Keenan is a Professor at Colby-Sawyer College's School of Arts & Sciences, Department of Fine and Performing Arts. He holds the Sonja C. Davidow ’56 Endowed Chair of Fine Arts and the Joyce J. Kolligian Distinguished Professorship in the Fine and Performing Arts. He teaches ceramics, East Asian art history, First-Year Experience, Wesson Honors Program courses, and online visual art studies while directing the William H. and Sonja C. Davidow '56 Fine Art Gallery.
- Education: MFA-CAGS from Kyoto City University of Arts (1983-86), B.A. in East Asian Studies from the University of New Hampshire (1978-1982), and study at Doshisha University and Associated Kyoto Program through Carlton College.
His studio work explores raku, high-fired glazed ceramics, and anagama wood-fired functional and sculptural clay work. He has led Wesson Honors Program field studies to Nepal, including earthquake relief efforts, and has exhibited internationally in Japan, Italy, and the United States. His research spans Japanese language and culture, ceramic history, and cross-cultural engagement.
He has received fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation, New England Foundation for the Arts, and the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts. His recent activities include Adventurers in Learning presentations, workshops on raku firing, and collaborations with institutions like Tokyo University of the Arts and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
