Sonia Almeida

Sonia Almeida is a Professor of Fine Arts in the Department of Fine Arts at Brandeis University since 2014. Her work investigates the interplay between language, visual art, and materiality, focusing on processes of fragmentation and multiplicity. She teaches courses in Printmaking, Artists' Books, and Fabric Arts.

Almeida’s artistic practice combines painting, fabric-based works, and sculptural elements with hinges or sliding mechanisms. Her research questions traditional painting hierarchies and explores hybrid spaces between digital and analog mediums, as seen in her 2024 exhibition “Between Pixel and Pigment” at Kunsthalle Bielefeld and Marta Herford.

Her work has been recognized with awards like the Guggenheim Fellowship (2024) and the FLAD Grant (2022). She engages in academic collaborations, including a symposium organized by the Kunstakademie Münster.
