Dr. John Willan is a Supernumery Fellow in Clinical Medicine at Brasenose College, University of Oxford, and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Haematology at the Nuffield Division of Clinical Laboratory Science. He is also a Consultant Haematologist at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Frimley Health Foundation Trust. His qualifications include a BA (Cantab), BM BCh (Oxon), DPhil (Oxon), MRCP, and FRCPath.
He specializes in clinical teaching for medical students, focusing on personalized education in clinical medicine. His research interests include machine-learning algorithms for risk assessment in haematology, particularly in managing patients with blood cancers and thrombosis. He has developed an algorithm for improving DVT/PE risk stratification and a web-based patient management system for haemophilia, earning a local innovation award. His work has addressed challenges in healthcare delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic, including guidelines for haematology patients and long-COVID risks.
