John Thwaites is a Professor and Chair of the Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI) and ClimateWorks Australia (CWA) at Monash University. He operates within the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Enterprise, contributing significantly to sustainability research and policy development in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. His work is closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in governance, urban sustainability, and climate action.
His research interests focus on sustainable development policy, environmental governance, urban benchmarking for SDGs, and public health interventions. He leads major initiatives that bridge the gap between academic research and practical policy implementation, working with government bodies such as the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), and municipal authorities like the City of Melbourne.
His recent publications and reports highlight trends in national and city-level SDG progress, behavior change during public health crises, and global health investment frameworks. These works reflect an interdisciplinary approach combining policy analysis, systems thinking, and sustainability science.
