John Powell is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Science and Technology at Bournemouth University, specializing in human-centred design, drowning prevention, and product design. He is actively involved in research, teaching, and international safety initiatives, with strong affiliations to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), WHO, and British Standards Institute.

His professional practice includes co-designing fisher safety solutions in Tanzania and developing community production resources in Zanzibar with Arts University Bournemouth and local NGOs.
