Mike Tipton is Professor of Human and Applied Physiology at the University of Portsmouth, Faculty of Science & Health, School of Psychology, Sport and Health Sciences. He leads the Extreme Environments Laboratory, focusing on physiological and psychological responses to adverse environments. He is actively involved in research, supervision, and public engagement, with affiliations to the RNLI, UK Sport, and The Physiological Society.
His research interests include:
- Thermoregulation in extreme environments
- Cold water immersion and survival
- Heat stress and acclimation
- Drowning prevention and water safety
- Physiological adaptation to hypoxia
- Climate change and human health
His recent publications reflect a strong focus on environmental physiology, human performance in extreme conditions, and public health implications of climate change. Key themes include cold water swimming, heat acclimation, drowning prevention, and the physiological impacts of climate extremes on vulnerable populations. His work integrates experimental physiology with real-world applications in sport, military, and emergency response settings.
Scientific awards and recognitions include:
- MBE for services to physiological research in extreme environments
- HL Swiftwater Rescue Lifetime Achievement Award
- Honorary Life Member, International Association for Safety & Survival Training
- Fellow, Royal Society of Medicine
- Fellow, The Physiological Society
- Trustee, The Physiological Society
- Ireland Medal for saving lives from drowning
- Life membership, Surf Lifesaving GB
Mike Tipton has advised numerous governmental and non-governmental organizations, including the Royal Air Force, UK Sport, RNLI, and the Energy Institute. He served as Editor-in-Chief of Experimental Physiology (2016–2022) and Senior Editor of Extreme Physiology & Medicine. He has been a Trustee of Surf Lifesaving GB (2012–2022) and remains active on the Energy Institute’s Health Technical Committee. His lab conducts impactful research on survival strategies, protective equipment, and fitness standards for offshore and military personnel.
