Dr. Heather Massey is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth, specializing in Sport, Health, and Exercise Science. She is affiliated with the Extreme Environments Laboratory, CHaRT research team, and the Centre for Integrated Health and Wellbeing. Her research focuses on cold-water immersion, thermal physiology, and health outcomes in extreme environments. She holds honorary roles at Sussex Partnership NHS Trust and serves on the Medical Advisor board of the Ectodermal Dysplasia Society.
Dr. Massey's educational background includes a BSc and MSc from Loughborough University and a PhD from the University of Portsmouth. She has extensive postdoctoral experience and collaborates with organizations like the Institute of Naval Medicine. Her teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including modules on Environmental Physiology and Humans in Extreme Environments.
Her research explores cold-water safety, water safety messaging, heat acclimation, and the physiological impacts of extreme environments. She actively engages with media and public outreach, contributing to The Conversation and advising on water safety guidelines. She supervises PhD students in environmental physiology and water safety and mentors early-career academics through the Women in Sport and Exercise Academic Network.
Dr. Massey's work extends to community initiatives, including promoting safe outdoor swimming through organizations like Swim the Wight. Her research outputs emphasize practical applications in health, safety, and environmental adaptation.
