Thomas Williams is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Physiology at the University of Portsmouth, affiliated with the School of Psychology, Sport and Health Sciences and Extreme Environments Research Group. He holds a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science and an MSc in Sports Physiology from the University of Chester.
Research Interests focus on physiological responses to extreme environments (hypoxia, heat, cold) and their impact on cognitive performance. His work examines thermophysiology, hypoxic cross-tolerance, and stressor combinations (sleep deprivation, exercise) using advanced metrics like SpO2 entropy analysis. Projects include ear-canal oximetry validation, acute mountain sickness prediction, and keto-based nutritional interventions for diabetes.
Research Outputs include peer-reviewed articles on heat acclimation, cognitive performance under hypoxia, and thermoregulatory garment efficacy. Collaborations span institutions like Anglia Ruskin University and industry partners such as Survitec and OxiWear.
Teaching responsibilities include Introduction to Sport and Exercise Physiology and Environmental Physiology modules. He has presented at the European College of Sports Science and delivered invited talks at multiple institutions.
