Jo Corbett is a Professor of Human Applied and Environmental Physiology at the University of Portsmouth, where she leads the Extreme Environments Laboratory. She holds dual roles as Deputy Associate Dean for Research and Innovation (REF) in the Faculty of Science and Health and as a Fellow of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES). Her work focuses on environmental stressors (heat, hypoxia, hydration), cross-stressor tolerance, and therapeutic applications of environmental adaptations in health and disease. She has led REF preparations for the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences and now oversees the Faculty's REF 2021 strategy.
Education: MSc Exercise Physiology (University of Chichester, Distinction); PhD in Fat Metabolism. Professional roles include BASES-accredited Sports Scientist, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and committee member of the Wellcome Trust. Her research is funded by industry, defense, elite sports, and health organizations.
Research interests include optimizing human performance in extreme environments through interdisciplinary approaches. Key areas include heat acclimation strategies, hypoxic tolerance, and therapeutic roles of environmental stressors. She collaborates internationally on projects addressing cardiovascular health, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and athlete safety.
Grants & Projects:
- Lead Investigator on projects funded by industry, defense, and health groups
- Active projects include: 'Climate Adaptation Drinks for Type 2 Diabetes' and 'Sauna Effects on Sleep and Adaptation'
- Co-Investigator on studies involving Ear-Canal Oximetry, Collagen Supplementation, and OxiWear Device Development
Labs & Teams: Extreme Environments Laboratory, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams on physiological stress and environmental adaptation. Supervises postgraduate students in applied physiology and environmental health research.
Awards:
