Professor John Murphy is the Head of the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick, leading strategic initiatives including the STEM Connect Project. He holds a Royal Academy of Engineering/EPSRC Research Fellowship and has been instrumental in establishing the Electronic Materials and Interfaces Group. His expertise spans materials science, semiconductor engineering, and photovoltaics, with over £15M in research grants as PI/Co-I. He has authored >100 publications and given >60 conference presentations, including chair roles at major conferences like GADEST and E-MRS.
Education:
- MA in Physics (University of Oxford, 2003)
- DPhil in Materials Science (University of Oxford, 2006)
- PGDipLATHE (University of Oxford, 2011)
Research Interests: Focuses on electronic materials for photovoltaics, batteries, optoelectronics, and THz technologies. His group uses atomic layer deposition (ALD) to create ultra-thin coatings for applications in silicon solar cells, lithium-ion batteries, and THz imaging. Collaborations include Oxford, Exeter, and Fraunhofer ISE.
Awards:
- FInstP, FIMMM, SFHEA, CEng, CPhys
- EPSRC Programme Grant (Terabotics)
Teaching & Leadership: Led curriculum restructuring for Mechanical Engineering accreditation (AHEP4) and oversees degree apprenticeships. Supervises projects and serves on University-wide committees, including the Faculty Board for Science, Engineering, and Medicine.
Labs & Groups: Leads the Electronic Materials and Interfaces Group, leveraging ALD facilities to advance material interfaces and defect engineering.
