Professor John F Watts holds the academic rank of Professor in Materials Science within the School of Mechanical Engineering Sciences. He specializes in surface analysis techniques like XPS and ToF-SIMS, focusing on adhesive bonding mechanisms for aerospace/automotive applications and corrosion prevention through organic coatings. His research also addresses cathodic delamination phenomena in coatings and interfaces between materials.
Education: PhD, DSc, DUniv(Paris), CEng, FIMMM, FInstP, CPhys, FREng. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Surface and Interface Analysis, sits on the International Steering Committee for ECASIA Conferences, and holds editorial roles in International Journal of Adhesion and Adhesives.
Awards include the prestigious Le Prix Dédale and a Doctorate Honoris Causa from Université Paris Diderot (2011). His work spans advanced materials characterization, battery technologies, and environmental applications of green infrastructure. Research emphasizes interfacial chemistry in adhesives, electrolyte-cathode interactions in batteries, and particulate capture mechanisms in urban environments.
Publications focus on cutting-edge materials science, with recent contributions addressing W/Cu alloy interfaces, sodium-sulfur battery electrolytes, and green wall pollution mitigation. His interdisciplinary approach bridges surface chemistry, energy storage, and environmental engineering.
