معرفی
Prof. John P. Dear FREng is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London's Department of Mechanical Engineering, part of the Faculty of Engineering. He leads the Composites, Adhesives and Soft Solids (CASS) Group, comprising eight academics. His expertise spans structural integrity of materials, manufacturing processes, and microstructural effects. He has authored over 400 papers and 18 books, supervised 66 PhD students, and secured grants from EPSRC, ONR, and others.
John holds multiple honorary titles including CEng, FIMechE, CPhys, and FInstP. He earned his undergraduate degree and PhD at St John's College, Cambridge, followed by a Hertha Ayrton Research Fellowship at Girton College. His research focuses on advanced composites, blast performance of materials, and polymer behavior under extreme conditions. Key affiliations include the Mechanics of Materials Division and the Composites Centre at Imperial.
Research interests include:
- Composite materials under impact and blast loading
- Structural integrity of aerospace and automotive components
- Laminated glass facade performance
- Creep life analysis of materials in power plants
- High-strain rate material behavior
Recent work emphasizes additive manufacturing of composites, nanomaterials integration, and predictive modelling of material failure. His 2023 Royal Society lecture explored novel approaches to material toughness. Grants include EU Commission funding and industry partnerships with UK/US companies.
Notable achievements include:
- 2023 Royal Academy of Engineering Fellowship
- Over 400+ publications and 66 PhD supervisions
- Leadership in high-impact collaborative projects
Current focus areas include optimizing composite sandwich structures for blast resistance, developing repair methodologies for composite laminates, and advancing computational models for material behavior prediction. His CASS Group actively explores emerging technologies in additive manufacturing and nanocomposite applications.
