John Lyon is a Professor of German and holds dual roles as School Chair and Charles Smithgall Jr. Institute Chair at the School of Modern Languages, Georgia Institute of Technology. His scholarly work focuses on 18th and 19th century German literature, philosophy, and culture, with notable contributions including monographs like Crafting Flesh, Crafting the Self (2006) and Out of Place: German Realism, Displacement, and Modernity (2013). He co-edited volumes such as Theodor Fontane in the Twenty-First Century (2019) and currently researches transnationalism in 19th-century European adultery novels. Lyon also oversees the New Studies in the Age of Goethe book series and previously chaired the Humanities Council at the University of Pittsburgh.
His interdisciplinary contributions extend to biomedical engineering through collaborations in neural tissue engineering, immunotherapy strategies for brain tumors, and biomaterials research. Notable projects include developing drug delivery systems across the blood-brain barrier and investigating electrotactic behavior in cancer cells.
Lyon teaches courses such as Intro to German Literature and Conversation & Composition, and has led initiatives in laboratory design for chronic neural stimulation studies. His work bridges humanities and STEM through innovative applications of cultural analysis and biomedical innovation.
