PD Dr. Malte Stein is an Adjunct Professor (Privatdozent) at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Humanities, affiliated with the Institute of German Studies. His academic career includes serving as a visiting professor at the University of Cologne (2014-2015) and ongoing teaching roles since 2011. He holds a PhD (2005) and Habilitation (2011) from Universität Hamburg, with foundational studies in German, History, and Social Sciences at Bonn and Hamburg (1992-1998).
Stein's research centers on narratology, psychoanalytic literary criticism, and 18th-19th century German literature, with specialized expertise in Goethe and Theodor Storm. His work frequently bridges literary analysis with pedagogy, exploring intersections of poetry, narrative theory, and didactic applications.
His publications demonstrate a strong focus on German Realism and Romanticism, with recurring themes of psychological conflict, sociocultural critique, and educational methodology. Recent works emphasize Storm's poetry adaptations and didactic approaches to canonical texts.
Stein teaches advanced seminars on German literature and didactics, including courses on Storm, Goethe, and literary theory. He maintains active memberships in the Theodor-Storm-Gesellschaft (board member) and Achim-von-Arnim-Gesellschaft, and has organized international conferences on narratology and literary studies.
