John Hopkins

John Hopkins is an Associate Professor of Art History at New York University, affiliated with the Department of Fine Arts and the Institute of Fine Arts. His research focuses on Roman and early Italic art, urbanism, and cultural heritage. Hopkins holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin (2007), an M.A. in Art History (2002), and a B.S. in Theater from Northwestern University (2000).

His research explores ancient Mediterranean visual culture, spatial theory, and the materiality of art-making. He has authored influential works like The Genesis of Roman Architecture (2016) and co-edited Object Biographies (2021). Hopkins has received prestigious awards including the 2018 Spiro Kostof Book Award and a Getty Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010-2011).

His recent publications analyze Roman urbanism and artifact provenance, emphasizing collaborative methodologies. He teaches courses on Roman art, material culture, and museum studies.

Grants and fellowships span decades, including the 2009 Rome Prize (American Academy in Rome) and Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Fellowship (2009-2010). Hopkins actively collaborates with museums on provenance projects through the Collections Analysis Collaborative (CAC).

He is affiliated with the Archaeological Institute of America and leads research initiatives in early Roman architecture, spatial theory, and cultural heritage preservation.
