Sheila Crane is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Architectural History at the University of Virginia's School of Architecture. She also serves as Director of Graduate Studies in Architectural History and Co-Chair of the Art & Architectural History PhD program.

Crane’s research investigates urban landscapes shaped by imperialism, settler colonialism, migration, militarization, and decolonization. She focuses on everyday spatial practices, informal settlements, and historical entanglements between Europe and North Africa, particularly in Marseille and Algiers.
Her publications analyze colonial architecture, urban conflict, and informal urbanism. Recent works examine the bidonville (shantytown) concept in Morocco and Algeria, challenging colonial narratives through decolonial frameworks.
