Dr. John R. Clarke is a Professor of Art History (Greek and Roman Art and Architecture) at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his PhD from Yale University and joined UT Austin in 1980, where his research focuses on ancient Roman art, art-historical methodology, and contemporary interpretations of classical works.
His research examines visual representations in Roman domestic spaces to understand cultural practices and beliefs. Major publications analyze erotic art, humor in visual culture, and non-elite viewership patterns. Current work involves co-directing the Oplontis Project, excavating Roman villas buried by Vesuvius, supported by NEH grants and the Center for the Study of Ancient Italy.
He has served on advisory boards including the National Gallery of Art's Center for Advanced Study (2013-2016) and was Trustee of the American Academy in Rome (2011-2013). Clarke curated the traveling exhibition 'Leisure and Luxury in the Age of Nero' featuring never-before-seen artifacts from Oplontis.
