Dr John Grainger is a Senior Lecturer at The University of Manchester's Division of Immunology, Immunity to Infection and Respiratory Medicine. His research integrates fundamental immunology with clinical applications, focusing on myeloid cell regulation in diseases like stroke, periodontitis, and inflammatory conditions. He co-directs an MB-PhD programme in inflammation biology and collaborates extensively with institutions like the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Konkel Lab, and the Stroke-IMPaCT network.
- Education: BSc in Molecular Biology (University College London, 2004), MRes/PhD (University of Edinburgh, Wellcome Trust programme)
Research Interests: The lab specializes in Myeloid Cells in Precision Medicine, investigating monocytes/macrophages in health and disease. Key themes include:
- Gut and Oral Macrophages: Collaborating with the Konkel Lab to study differentiation and roles in type 2 inflammation.
- Stroke Immunology: Exploring post-stroke immune activation leading to infections and cognitive decline with Professors Stuart Allan and Craig Smith.
Article Trends: Recent work spans thromboinflammation in stroke-Covid comorbidities (2025), T cell plasticity in periodontitis (2024), monocyte migration in acute/long Covid (2023), aging-related wound healing (2022), and selenoprotein meta-analyses in stroke (2022).
Advising & Collaborations: Supervises 4 PhD/MB-PhD students. Lab team includes 3 postdoctoral researchers, 2 technicians, and collaborations with the Lydia Becker Institute. Projects include stroke-associated infection prevention (with Allan/Smith) and post-stroke pneumonia diagnostics.
