John E. McCarthy is an Associate Professor at Cornell University's ILR School in the Department of Labor Relations, Law and History. His research examines collaborative organizations, employee participation, and the impact of emerging technologies (particularly generative AI) on work. He leads the JEM Lab for Generative AI at Work and holds a PhD from Rutgers University with fellowships at Wharton and MIT.
Research Focus: Labor-management dynamics, organizational networks, economic resilience, and technology's impact on work structures.
Awards: John T. Dunlop Outstanding Scholar Award (2020) and multiple best paper awards from major associations.
Advising & Grants: Supervises PhD students (Jayeon Lee, Benjamin Chatterton) and secured funding from NEA, Gates Foundation, and US Department of Labor totaling over $180,000.
