John E. McCarthy is a Professor of Mathematics and Courtesy Professor of Statistics and Data Science at Washington University in St. Louis. He holds the Spencer T. Olin Professorship of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on Operator Theory, Complex Variables (one and several), and their interactions. He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from UC Berkeley (1989), M.Sc. from Trinity College Dublin (1987), and B.A. from Trinity College Dublin (1983). McCarthy has been Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (2016-2021) and has held visiting positions at institutions worldwide.
He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (2018) and has received awards such as the G. de B. Robinson Award (2016). McCarthy has supervised over 20 Ph.D. students and contributed to interdisciplinary research in neuroscience, imaging, and public health. He founded the St. Louis Academy of Mathematical Sciences to foster collaboration across institutions.
Key research themes include non-commutative function theory, Hilbert spaces, and applications of mathematics in medicine and imaging. His work bridges pure and applied mathematics, emphasizing the utility of mathematical perspectives in science.
