Conor McCarthy is a Senior Lecturer in English at Maynooth University, part of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. He holds a BA from Trinity College Dublin, an MA from University College Dublin, and a D.Phil. from Sussex University. His research focuses on Edward Said, Irish intellectual history, postcolonial theory, and Western Marxism. He has published extensively on Said, James Connolly, and academic freedom in Palestine, including the book Enforcing Silence: Academic Freedom, Palestine and the Critique of Israel (2020).
McCarthy is Associate Editor of College Literature and co-ordinates Maynooth's Second Year English program. He teaches courses on Romanticism, Marxism, and Irish literature, emphasizing critical engagement with political thought. He has organized major events like the 2018 '(Re-)Birth of Marx(-ism)' conference. His activism includes founding the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Academics for Palestine, advocating for the academic boycott of Israeli institutions.
His honors include the Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship (2000-2002) and a British Academy Doctoral Studentship (1992). He blogs at Reflections from Damaged Life, exploring themes like Palestinian rights and Marxist theory.
