John Carroll: Academic Profile
John Carroll is a Professor & Dean in the Sub Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at Monash University, affiliated with the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute. He holds a PhD from the University of Adelaide (1991) and has held academic positions at the MRC Experimental Embryology Unit in London and University College London (UCL), where he became Associate Dean and Director of the Division of Biosciences. Since 2012, he has led the School of Biomedical Sciences at Monash.
Research Focus: His work investigates oocyte development, meiosis, mitochondrial function, and their roles in fertility. Key areas include mechanisms of chromosome abnormalities in aging oocytes, mitochondrial dynamics, and translational research with Monash IVF to improve oocyte quality.
Projects & Collaborations:
- Principal Investigator of the MitoHOPE Program (2023–2029): Introducing mitochondrial donation in Australia.
- Lead on studies of mitochondrial DNA, sperm mitochondrial elimination, and mRNA clinical trials.
Awards:
- Recipient of the Vice-Chancellor's Diversity and Inclusion Award (2020).
