Dr. Deepak Adhikari is a Senior Research Fellow at Monash University's Anatomy & Developmental Biology department, affiliated with the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute. He holds a PhD from Umeå University (2014) focusing on primordial follicle development in mammalian ovaries. His research explores mitochondrial functions in oocytes and embryos, particularly their roles in fertility, reproductive lifespan, and offspring health. Collaborative projects include mitochondrial replacement therapies and the MitoHOPE program.
Research Interests: Oocyte biology, mitochondrial dynamics, reproductive aging, mitochondrial-nuclear communication, and epigenetic regulation during oogenesis. His work bridges basic science with clinical applications to address fertility preservation and mitochondrial diseases.
Key Projects:
- MitoHOPE: Evaluating mitochondrial donation in assisted reproduction (2023–2029)
- Mechanisms of mitochondrial distribution in embryos (2023–2026)
- Role of mitochondrial DNA in oocyte quality (2023–2025)
Advisees & Grants: Accepting PhD students through Monash's SupervisorConnect. Lead investigator on Australian Research Council and NHMRC grants totaling over AUD 5M.
Labs & Teams: Leads a lab focused on oocyte mitochondrial function within the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams in reproductive biology and mitochondrial medicine.
